StoryBrand | STFO 🐔

My friend and former client, Peter Kiefer, asked for my thoughts on the book "Building a Story Brand" by Donald Miller. Here's what I wrote:

Before I start ranting, a few caveats:

  • I have read the earlier edition, so I might be missing a trick or two.
  • I have massive respect for what Donald Miller has built as a business. His business model has inspired me and continues to do so.

I think this book is very helpful for folks who want to bring their marketing from 0 to 1. Typically, business owners who have never done any marketing (at least consciously). It helps switch the focus from them/their company to the customer. So, it’s good for market orientation and the communications part of marketing.

For individuals with a solid marketing foundation, it’s helpful when they get lost in the details and need to reset everything so the fog clears. Other than that, it’s way too basic. It’s storytelling 101, without much depth to help folks go deeper into more advanced use cases.

And finally, because it only covers communications and messaging, it doesn’t address the topic of differentiation whatsoever. So, if you’re in a crowded market and your competitors have decent marketing knowledge, it won't help you… well… stand the f*ck out.

Over to you... Have you read the book? What did you think of it?
